I’m sometimes responsible for saying a prayer to open business meetings at church. I find this job extremely challenging. I’m frequently searching for inspiration and examples of “meeting prayers.” So, I thought I would start sharing what I write in case this is a challenge for you, too, and to say “pretty please share any good examples you come across, thank you so much.”
Gracious, loving God,
Thank you for another opportunity to gather in service of your church.
Let us approach our work with humility.
We know that you know what is injured and how to heal it. Help us to act as loving caregivers.
We know that you know where there is strength in this body that can carry us forward. Help us to see and summon it.
We know that you know what work is ours to do and what work is not. Help us to pursue what is ours and to step back from what isn't.
We know that you see the whole picture. Help us to remember that our views are limited.
We know that you know our individual hearts. Help us to be present to each other.
When we are tempted by judgment, infuse us with curiosity.
When we are haunted by past experiences, offer us a fresh perspective.
When we are confused, show us a path to clarity.
When we are burdened, inspire us so that we can inspire and uplift others.
We are grateful that you are present with us, now and always. May we stay attuned to the sacredness of this time and place.
Amen.
I struggle with this too. I keep this one saved in my phone because I can usually get inspiration ::
This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring
forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I
am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still,
help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it
patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly.
Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit
of Jesus. Amen.
